1957 : US forms the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA)

In response to the launch of  USSR's Sputnik

• To design a way to communicate in an incident proof manner : not centralized.

• To avoid ARPA's Head having too many keyboards on his desk

60s : Start of research

• Cooperative network of time-sharing computers

• Packet-switching networks; no single outage point

69 : ARPANET commissioned by DoD for research into networking

• First Request for Comment (RFC): "Host Software" by Steve Crocker (7 April)
