TOPIC: Web Crisis Management

SUMMARY: Tom will explain how web technology can be used to improve crisis communications in an emergency, such as a fire or flood. He will illustrate this with web sites from the Canberra Bushfire emergency. He will show the redesign of a Tsunami recovery web site using newer web technologies, such as XHTML and CSS, to allow it to operate on wireless hand held terminals. This is a special expanded version of a presentation for the Australian Computer Society on 6 April.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Tom Worthington is an independent consultant, providing advice on information technology strategies, the design of web sites and use of e-commerce systems. He is a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Computer Science at the Australian National University. In 1999 Tom was elected a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society for his contribution to the development of public Internet policy. Tom is a past president, Fellow and Honorary Life Member of the Australian Computer Society, a voting member of the Association for Computing Machinery and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
